Grad Center Users: Download Endnote on your PC or Mac, free!
Endnote, like Refworks and Zotero, organizes citations & notes, connects with image, text, PDF files & URLs to make your personal research archive searchable and manageable. Imports citations from google scholar and library resources through Endnote filters to format correctly.
Endnote generates footnotes and bibliography in any writing style. The Cite While You Write feature inserts and formats footnotes and bibliography in Word documents.
Unlike Refworks, Endnote is based on your computer. Your Endnote "library" can be carried on a jump drive. You can use Endnote without being connected to the Internet. Unlike Zotero, Refworks and Endnote are fee-based, available free to CUNY and GC users, respectively.

Upgrade
Recommendation #1: back up Endnote custrom styles, filters, connection files, and libraries.
Recommendation #2: uninstall older versions of EndNote. "Start > Programs > EndNote > Uninstall EndNote" or "Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs"
- To use libraries created with EndNote 5, 6, or 7, convert the library through EndNote X. EndNote X will convert the library to the EndNote X format and leave the original library unchanged.
- EndNote X libraries are not backwards compatible with EndNote 7 or lower.
- In Microsoft Word 2000, XP, and 2003 documents, EndNote X automatically updates previous versions of EndNote Cite While You Write citations when you format the bibliography.
