EndNote: Importing Data

Back to EndNote Home

Endnote can import data from text files, provided you have the right filter installed on your computer. Below you will find instructions for saving citations to a text file for many of the databases here at the Graduate Center.

The list below does not contain all the databases subscribed by the Graduate Center. It is important to note that not all databases support data or text exporting. If this is the case you will have to manually enter citation data into an EndNote library.

Importing filters

Filters allow you to import references from text files. A filter is selected during the import process to instruct EndNote how to interpret the information in your text file (the records downloaded or saved from a database). A filter does this by mapping the information in each downloaded reference to the corresponding fields in EndNote. Because each database offered by the various information providers has its own way to organize reference data, there needs to be a different filter for each database. It is very important to use the correct filter, otherwise you may have incomplete or no data imported.

Filters can be downloaded from the EndNote (www.endnote.com) web site or from the links below. Many of the most common filters will be installed automatically with EndNote 8.

(The import filters must be saved into the \program files\endnote9\filters folder on your computer.)
