Formatted vs. Unformatted Citations
Back to EndNote Home
To insert a citation, EndNote embeds a temporary code in your Word document that identifies the citation from your library. The code includes last name of the first author, date and a reference ID corresponding to the record number in your library, for example {pringle,#21, 2001}
Endnote relies on these temporary codes to form the bibliography. If you alter the codes, formatting will fail.
When you format the citation, the unformatted code is transformed to a formatted version, according to the style you have selected, for example (Pringle, 2001)
