Importing from text files

After you have saved you citations as a text file you must import them into your library.

Choose Import from the File menu.

EndNote import dialog box.

  1. Click the Choose button and use the file dialog to locate the text file to import.
  2. Next to Import Option, use the list to select the file type:
  3. It is unlikely, that the first time you import a file, you will see the import filter that you need in this list. Choose Other Filters to find the filter that matches the source of the data you want to import. Once you have used an import filter, or marked it as a "favorite," it will appear in this list.

The import option field has many options, the most important are listed below.

    1. EndNote Import Use to import text files that have been downloaded from online databases or exported from EndNote using the EndNote format.
    2. Tab Delimited: Use to import text files in which the fields within a single reference are separated by tabs.
    3. Other Filters: EndNote includes hundreds of import filters configured to import data from a variety of online databases. Select this item to locate the appropriate filter. Endnote will look for any filters in the \program files\endnote9\filters folder.
  4. Next to Duplicates, select one of these options:
    1. Import All: Use to import all references, including duplicates, into the current library. Use this option. You can easily remove duplicate records later.
    2. Discard Duplicates: Use to import all references except duplicates.
    3. Import into Duplicates Library: Use to import references into the current library, but put all duplicate references into a library titled File-Dupl.enl (where "File" is the name of the current library) so you can review them later and possibly combine them.
  5. Next to Text Translation, select either No Translation or ANSEL. Choose No Translation.
  6. Click Import to begin importing references into the current library.

When the import is complete, only newly imported references display in the Library window. It is the perfect time to add a keyword to all of the imported references with the Change Field command, or to browse through the references for editing.

Note: If you have imported references into an existing library, and you want to view all references in the library (and not just those recently imported), go to the References menu and select Show All References.
