Suggested Timeline for Doctoral Dissertations

You are strongly encouraged to take advantage of workshops offered regularly on Microsoft Word for Dissertations, EndNote, or RefWorks early in the research and writing process. These will help develop your ability to organize your research more effectively and for writing longer documents.

Suggested timeline:

  1. Advancement to Level 3: Submit "Dissertation Proposal Clearance" and IRB approval as necessary.

  2. Attend workshops on Microsoft Word for Dissertations and EndNote if you haven't already done so.

  3. Review "Dissertation Print Copy Requirements"

  4. Get your oral defense date and submit your dissertation in draft form (providing the number of copies required in your discipline) to your supervisory (or guidance) committee for approval.

  5. While you are waiting for committee approval and your advancement to the oral defense. . .
    • Attend a "Dissertation Preparation Workshop"

    • Have a preliminary meeting with the Judy Waldman (Dissertation Assistant) in Room 2304 in the Mina Rees Library of The Graduate Center (212 817-7069) to review deposit procedures, a print draft copy  of your dissertation,  information about submitting large files and/or special formats, and to explain remaining procedures and fees.
  6. Defend your dissertation.
  7. Schedule your final deposit meeting with Judy Waldman
  8. Holders of a Perkins or Federal Direct Student Loan must arrange for an exit interview with the Office of Financial Aid. You must give the Office of Financial Aid (212 817- 7460) one week's notice
