                                    <div class="element-text">Originally built in 1898 for J. Hampden and Cornelia Van Rensselaer Robb.  Architect: Stanford White of McKim, Mead &amp; White.  Acquired by the Advertising Club of New York in 1923.  The group had the building remodeled by architect Fred F. French, and the club opened in 1924.  During repairs following a 1946 fire, the building was expanded to include an adjacent home at 103 E. 35th St. The building is now an apartment house.</div>

                                    <div class="element-text">The Park Avenue viaduct, built from 1917-1919, is located on Park Avenue between 40th and 42nd Streets. The raised roadway, which routes traffic around Grand Central Terminal on an elevated terrace, returns to street level on 45th Street. Over the years the area occupied by the viaduct has come to be known as Pershing Square. The city once planned to build a plaza named in honor of General John J. Pershing adjacent to the viaduct but the Pershing Square Building was built on that spot instead.  Pershing Square Building; Built: 1923; Architects: York &amp; Sawyer. The U-shaped 24 story office building originally contained a basement restaurant, street level shopping, and a second floor banking room.</div>

NYPL was formed in 1895 by the merger of the Astor Library, the Lenox Library, and the Tilden Trust.  In 1901 the New York Free Circulating Library merged with the Astor-Lenox-Tilden Library, making the newly formed institution eligible for funds donated to the city by Andrew Carnegie.   The library building was completed in 1911.  Carrere &amp; Hastings&#039; design was a high point of Beaux Arts architecture in the U.S.  The decorative program included urns, flagpoles, sculpture, and fountains.  The entrance is flanked by twin lions carved by E.C. Potter.</div>
