J. P. Morgan Home, Madison Avenue and 36th Street.

J.P. Morgan's home; Built: 1853; Razed: 1928. John Jay Phelps built the Italianate mansion as one of three identical brownstone homes on the block of Madison Avenue between 36th and 37th Streets. The other two homes were built by Isaac N. Phelps and William E. Dodge. J.P. Morgan, Sr. bought the Phelps home in 1882. He made few changes to the 3 story exterior but modernized the inside of the house considerably. In 1928 the house was demolished to make way for the Morgan Library Annex.

Twenty foot wide rowhouses. Their original unified facade was spoiled by the removal of stoops in favor of basement entrances at No. 131 and 135. All five row houses have original cornices featuring architectural details such as dentils, friezes, and modillions.

Pair of brownstones built 1855-1856 by developer George Lindford ; they originally shared a single cornice. The original iron fence remains. These homes are very similar to the pair of brownstones at No. 113-115. In the early 1950's, writer and editor Frederick Lewis Allen lived in No. 121.

Knickerbocker Trust Company - succeeded the Stewart Mansion at Fifth Avenue and 34th Street, 1910.

Northwest corner of 5th Avenue and 34th Street. Knickerbocker Trust Building, Built: 1902-1904; Architect: Stanford White of McKim, Mead & White. Although his design was never realized, White's plan for the 4 story building allowed for the addition of a 9 story office building above. The neo-classical bank had a narrow frontage on 5th Avenue notable for its heavy cornice supported by 4 massive columns.
