New York Public Library; Built: 1911; Architects: Carrere & Hastings. NYPL was formed in 1895 by the merger of the Astor Library, the Lenox Library, and the Tilden Trust. In 1901 the New York Free Circulating Library merged with the Astor-Lenox-Tilden Library, making the newly formed institution eligible for funds donated to the city by Andrew Carnegie. The library building was completed in 1911. Carrere & Hastings' design was a high point of Beaux Arts architecture in the U.S. The decorative program included urns, flagpoles, sculpture, and fountains. The entrance is flanked by twin lions carved by E.C. Potter.

The Waldorf-Astoria was razed in 1929 to make way for the Empire State Building. The A.T. Stewart Mansion, built: 1896; razed: 1902-1904; architect: James Kellum. The Stewart Mansion was home to the Manhattan Club, 1890-1899. The John Caswell Mansion, built: 1859. The Caswell Mansion was leased to the University Club in 1879 and the New York Club in 1887.

View south down Fifth Avenue from intersection with 34th Street. Northwest corner (foreground): residence of Caroline Astor at 350 Fifth Ave. Future site of the Astoria Hotel erected in 1897. Southwest corner (background): Waldorf Hotel; built in 1893 on the former site of William Astor's home.

The Waldorf Hotel combined with the Astoria in 1897. The hotel was moved uptown and the site was razed in 1929 to make way for the Empire State Building.
